Frequently Asked Questions

What are your stores' hours?

We are open Monday through Friday 9 AM to 8 PM and Saturday 9 AM to 5 PM. We are closed on Sunday, mostly because Ben would literally never stop working if we weren't. He really loves this place, but for the sake of those who work (and live) with him, we really do find it's best to allow our staff a day to spend with their families.

Where are you located?

Please visit our Contact page for our stores' addresses, phone numbers, and links to maps.

What if I lost my receipt?

No problem. As long as you gave us your name and phone number when you checked out, we can look it up for you.

What is your shoe return policy? Can I return them after 6 months use?

Are you kidding? We wouldn’t take shoes from our mothers after 6 months!! Try this: if the shoe suffers from a manufacturers defect, you can return it for a full refund. If you insisted on a size too small, we’ll let you return it for the size we recommended. If there’s blood oozing out the side of the shoe, yeah, we’ll probably exchange it. Bottom line: If you’re being reasonable, we’ll be reasonable.

Do you have sales?

Yes. Our sales will be shifting a bit from what they have been in the past. We plan to hold a mid-summer sale in July, a 2-Day sale after Thanksgiving, and a sale immediately following Christmas. We may throw some other fun ones in there, so make sure you're connected with us on facebook and signed up for our emails so you can be up to date on all the latest deals.

What brands do you carry?

Please visit this page to view a comprehensive list of the brands that we carry.

How are you different from a big box store?

We consider ourselves experts when it comes to any and all of the product in our stores. That means that we are here to answer all of your questions and to help you decide what is going to be best for your particular situation. We take the time to listen and more importantly, to get to know you as a person and as an active individual. Like any locally owned business, we want you to have a great experience. We want you to leave feeling informed and confident and brimming with excitement to talk about how amazing it is to have true customer service.

In short, we care about you, and we care about our community. That's how we're different.

How long will it take for me to get fitted for shoes?

You should allow at least a half hour to be properly fitted for a new pair of shoes. We will start by taking some measurements, watching you run or walk, and evaluating your foot type. We'll then choose several options we think will work best for you based on our observations. You'll try the shoes and we'll reevaluate the choices once we see them on your feet and help you narrow them down and choose the one that's right for you.

Is that curly-haired girl single? And can I have her number?

Believe me, we get this question A LOT. "Frequently Asked" cannot even begin to describe the regularity with which we receive this question. There should really be a separate section on this website for inquiries about Cristina.

But to answer your question, there is actually a pretty detailed screening process that one must go through to be deemed worthy, as well as an elaborate point system that requires a minimum to be accumulated before the screening process can begin. Should you wish to inquire about embarking on this process, please send a notorized letter of intent to 1551 Wealthy St SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49506.

If I buy something at one location, can I bring it back to either?

Yes you can, but PLEASE hold on to your receipt if you think you might bring it back to a different location than it was purchased.

Who should I contact for event sponsorship or donations?

Start with Steve Webster at our Grandville store.  You can contact him at s.webster@stridersrun.com.  You can also contact Ben Pickel. He's the manager of our Eastown location. His email is ben@stridersrun.com.

I hate paying full price, can I get a discount?

Glad you asked; Striders has a loyalty program designed just for you. For every purchase you make at full price, you get a 5% credit which can be applied on any future purchase.

In addition, members of our training groups, RunGR, Grand Rapids Running Club, and high school and middle school student athletes all receive 10% off on shoes and apparel in our stores.

I heard you have a loyalty program. What's that all about?

You heard correctly. The loyalty program is actually pretty simple. Any time you purchase something at full price, you'll get 5% of that purchase back as store credit that can be used on subsequent purchases. It's easy to enroll, just make sure we get your phone number, name, and either an email or street address next time you check out at one of our stores.

I would like to buy a shoe that you don’t carry; can you get it for me?

If we carry the brand, but not the model you want, we probably can order it for you. We do have to charge a special-order fee to cover shipping. But hey, it’s only pocket change to you! You want that special shoe so you’re not going to let a little extra money stand in your way.

I found my shoe at another store at a lower price. Will you match their price?

We took a poll amongst our staff members. It was unanimous; nobody was willing to take a cut in pay. Striders is the only dedicated running specialty store in West Michigan. The level of expertise and service we offer is unmatched, and we invest a great deal in training our staff to be experts. Stores that offer deep discounts on their footwear have to do so to compensate for their lack of service, so as in most cases, you truly get what you pay for.

Do you recycle shoes?

If you mean, do we grind them up, then NO. We do accept shoes that are suitable to be worn by other people. We donate used shoes to local agencies. Please don’t think of us as a ‘free’ dumpster.

My doctor said I need good shoes and orthotics. What do you think?

Well let’s think about it. If the opposite of good shoes is bad shoes, I’d go with good shoes. If using an orthotic supports your foot better, I’d opt for that as well. While we are trained at fitting shoes, we will never give medical advice.
